#himum is back and its turbo charged!
A while back I blogged about hashtag #himum. In fact in was way back, March 2009 to be exact.
You can read the original post here, but in summary I was talking about how my mother had begun watching my Twitter stream to stay in touch with where I was and what I was doing. Having discovered this, I had starting adding #himum to flag certain tweets to her.
Well two years on, we have BlueVia offering free of charge SMS API's to developers. One enterprising Spanish developer had a similar idea. Its likely that your mother is not registered on Twitter, but there may be certain tweets you want her to see. Therefore he and has created a cool new web service which scans for a specific hashtag keyword, converts that tweet to an SMS, and then sends it to your mothers mobile number as a text message. Simple. Genuis!
Tuiteamadres originally launched in Spanish, and seeing how close it was to the #himum idea I quickly offered up the idea to create an English version using the shorter #himum hashtag, and a few days later, we had a working service!
In three simple steps you enter your twitter handle, your mothers mobile number and select which of the supported countries she is in (UK, Argentina, Columbia, Chile and Mexico at launch) Once setup, each tweet tagged with #himum will land on her handset as a text message. You as the master account holder are charged per message sent to your mother, and the cool part is the developer earns a slice of each message revenue to encourage further investment in making the service even better.
Of course in reality you can use the service to send text to any nominated number, not just your mothers. Could be your husband, wife, boss, etc. Obviously I'm going to be a huge fan / user of this, but I think its a beautiful example of the simplicity and power of the BlueVia API's to bring services like this to life.
