Foursquare Black Friday data [INFOGRAPHIC] #4sq #apple #yam

OK, so Black Friday is an American retail tradition, but below is an interesting infographic from FourSquare which plots the retail therapy madness.

NOTE: jump on the American bandwagon, this Friday Apple will be offering discounts and free shipping in the UK as well, more here.

And Apple announce… a major anti climax... #apple #iphone #yam

So the whole worlds tech press (and a lot of its consumer press as well to be fair) were gazing towards Cupertino for the latest Apple product announcement. No one does geek showbiz like Apple. Facebook's recent #F8 was testament to that.

The blogosphere has been alight with rumours of iPhone 5, but ultimately the fanboi's were left disappointed.

Instead the company announced it was giving away the iPhone 3GS on two year carrier contracts. Only Apple can make "news" from discounting obsolete product. Kudos!

The already announced iOS5 including iCloud will be available for download from October 12th.

From the hardware perspective, iPhone 4S was announced. Highlights vs. iPhone 4 include:

  • Apple A5 chip
  • 1 GB of RAM.
  • First iPhone with a dual-core processor and dual-core graphics.
  • It is “up to seven times faster” than the previous iPhone
  • New antenna system that allows it to switch between two antennas for better sound quality and download speeds.
  • New 8-megapixel camera that can take 3264×2448 images, an increase of 60% from the iPhone 4. It is capable of taking in 73% more light than the iPhone 4 and is 33% faster.
  • 8 hours of 3G talk time, 10 hours of video

500,000 apps on the App Store, with 140,000 are iPad specific. 18 billion apps downloaded total so far, at a rate of 1 billion per month. Apple paid more than $3 billion to developers so far.

iOS app called Cards. You can make your own cards right on your phone, and Apple will print it out and send to you. If you mail it in the U.S. you’ll get a push notification to your phone when it arrives at the destination. $2.99 to mail in the U.S., and $4.99 internationally. After hearing Touchnote declare it was hard making money this morning in London, tonight they must be shitting themselves.

A side show from the announcement was the fact the Apple.com has seemingly been hacked. I grabbed this screen shot.

Microsoft Finally Admits Windows Media Center Is A Dud #apple #appletv #microsoftt

Windows-media-center

I've spent a lot time trying to hook up my PC's with my home theatre system to free my digital music and movies from the confines of my desktop. Over the years I've tried Windows Media Centre on XP and Windows 7, recently moving onto Apple TV.

Interesting data released by Microsoft, as reported by Business Insider, show only 6% of Windows 7 users ever open Windows Media Centre, with 59% of those sessions seeing less than 2 minuted of activity.

The lack of a developer ecosystem offering Media Centre support and tools for 3rd parties meant that Microsoft threw away the opportunity to own the digital living room, before 'apps' and 'app stores' became all the rage. This is even more criminal when you consider they have the Xbox platform as well.

Whilst Apple have referred to Apple TV as a "hobby" rather than a product, it has already surpassed Media Centre in terms of features, including;

  • On demand iTunes movie rental
  • iTunes library sharing
  • The awesome Airplay ultuility for playing out content from iPhone or iPad
  • The Apple TV remore control app for iPhone or iPad
  • 3rd party apps, like MLB TV, YouTube, Vimeo, and Flickr
It seems logical that a fully featured Apple TV App Store will eventually turn up. Of course, Apple TV installation and usability beats Windows Media Centre hands down.

Still not clear on the music label licensing implications of all this, but as a consumer it sounds awesome!

Apples & Oranges partner to offer free film rental #itunes #apple #orange

Images

Got an interesting email from iTunes this morning. UK Mobile Operator, Orange, famous for its 'Orange Wednesdays' cinema ticket promotion has announced a deal with iTunes to offer a free movie rental via iTunes every Thursday. Not sure why they couldn't keep Wednesday for the day of the offer, which comes with all the previous marketing investment, but hey nice idea none the less. This kind of deal may also signal a step up in focus for Apple TV. As an Apple TV owner I'd love this, as everything is primed ready to play straight through the living room setup.

Bizarrely there is no mention of the new offer on the Orange Wednesday website.

iPhone 5 rumours continue grow #apple #mobile

For a few months now the rumour mill has been going at full speed. Normally new iPhones hit the street in the summer, but so far nothing…today there has been a spike in conversations around the supposed launch later this year.

Perhaps one of the hottest topics for debate is will it be an incremental upgrade i.e. an iPhone 4S or a full revision.

This is the most impressive render of what it may look like:

Media_httpstaticbusin_mbdfc

The word on the street is Apple have ordered 20 million units for launch, 9to5 Mac claim here it may be as much as 25 - 26 million units. French Mobile Operator Orange made reference to the device in a new job listing, story here. They claim it was an "error", may be they got a call from Cupertino asking "WTF?"

Actually probably the most exciting part is iOS 5. With over 200 new features, including the long overdue sync via Wi-Fi and the launch of iCloud storage and synchronisation across all your devices.

What ever it may or may not be, the waiting seems to be nearly over...September 8th is being positioned as the possible launch event, according to this Mashable article.

Keep your eyes peeled. I'll try and keep this post updated with the lastest gossip.
